Hiking in the Andes

We hired a private driver to take us approximately 2 hours into the Andes Mountains where we hiked up to San Francisco glacier. I would highly recommend this if you are a hiker and only have a couple days in Santiago. We would have liked to complete many more hikes in this region but our time was limited.
We met a great couple online (hugs to you keith and helen if reading) who wanted to do this tour with us. Unfortunately, Helen wasn't able to complete the steep incline and our guide hiked back down with this couple to spend the day at the base of the mountain while Bob and I continued.
The hike was about 8 miles. While only 1,700 feet of elevation gain, much of that was in the very beginning on a short steep stretch of terrain filled with loose gravel (this is why Helen was unable to continue). We persevered and the glacier lake was a very lovely reward. All in all, a great day on the mountain and perfect way to check off "Hiked in the Andes" off the bucket list.
